Windows 98 PPP Setup Guide
Part I | Part II | Part III
A windows 98 PPP connection requires 3 main components: Dial-Up Networking, Dial-up Adapter, and TCP/IP. These components should already be installed on all systems with Windows 98. To verify the existence of these components on your system make sure to have the windows 98 CD or diskettes ready.
Dial-Up Networking
- Double-click My Computer. If the Dial-Up
Networking icon is not present, open the Control Panel. Go through the following:
Add/Remove Programs >> Windows Setup
>> Communications
Check the box next to Dial-Up Networking and click O.K. Close the
Control Panel.

If neither are present, you will have to add the components. You will need your windows 98 CD or diskettes ready.
Dial-Up Adapter: Click Add, and select Adapter and click Add. Under manufacturer in the left, select Microsoft and on the right, select Dial-Up Adapter and click O.K.
- TCP/IP: Click Add, and select Protocol and click Add. Under manufacturer in the left, select Microsoft and on the right, select TCP/IP and click O.K. Unlike Windows 95, it is not generally necessary to configure the TCP/IP Settings here.
If you had to install these components, you will need to restart your computer for these settings to take effect. After restarting, you will need to configure and create the Dial-Up Networking Connection.
