Problem that generally occurs with the incorrect installation of the modem. Several possible scenarios:
Possibility
The modem is not installed properly. Verify that the modem is properly plugged in and and cables are attached to the correct jack.
Solution
Re-install the modem. Go the Control Panel and remove the modem from your system. Re-start the computer and it should detect new hardware. As much as possible, try to use the drivers that came with the modem.Possibility
The modem is installed on a different COM port.
Solution
You can specify a different port in the Dial-Up Networking properties. Open My Computer and then double-click on Dial-Up Networking. Right-click the 95Net connection icon and select Properties. In the lower left corner, click on the Configure button. Try changing the COM port to a different number. Generally, COM 2 is used for the modem. Try using 1, 3 or 4.Possibility
The modem is being used by another program, such as a Fax program.
Solution
Make sure that all other programs which use the modem are closed.Possibility
There is a conflict in the IRQ settings.
Solution
This one is a tough. It's a hardware issue that we generally don't deal with. In such a situation, you should try to re-install the modem first. If that fails, you need to play around with the IRQ settings in My Computer. This should only be attempted by someone who know what they're doing.
3 possibilities for this problem:
- Possibility
The phone line is being shared, and an incoming phone call has broken your connection or someone picked up a phone using this same line.
Solution
To remedy this, you need to disable call waiting by entering a *70, before the number to be dialed or simply get a second phone line.
Possibility
The connection has been inactive for a period of 15 minutes straight without any activity whatsoever.
Solution
The smallest activity will keep the connection active. Checking your e-mail is an example of activity. This timeout helps our lines to become more efficient by not allowing anybody to abuse the line. Dial-Up PPP connections are not dedicated connections and any attempt to maintain one on a dial-up account will result in the suspension of the account.Possibility
The quality of the phone line or connection has degraded to the point where a disconnection occurs.
Solution
This can either be a phone line or hardware problem. There's not a whole lot you can do about a phone line problem other than change the line. A hardware problem of this nature can be corrected usually by using an initialization string. Initialization strings are entered in the following location:
My Computer >> Dial-Up Networking >> 95Net Properties >> Configure >> Connection >> Advanced
Place the initialization string in the Extra Settings box. Init strings vary and may be found in any search engine on the Web or the website of the modem's manufacturer.
The message "Line is busy, try again later" appears on screen.
The modem-to-user ratio maintained by 95Net is approximately 10 to 1. This ratio generally keeps our lines efficient. 2 possibilities for this message to appear are:
Possibility
An additional number needs to be dialed prior to dialing out.
Solution
Check to see if a number 9 or any other number needs to be dialed prior to dialing. If so, in the Connect to 95Net window, click on the Dial Properties button. Toward the middle, where it says "To dial a local number, first dial.." enter the number to be used and then click OK at the bottom.Possibility
The lines really are busy.
Solution
Try an alternate local access number. If that doesn't work, try dialing the number from a regular phone to verify that they are busy. If after several minutes, you are unsuccessful, there might possibly be a problem with the 95Net system. Contact the 95Net office to verify the integrity and availability of the system.
Possibility
There is only one possibility for this problem, and that is the phone company's circuits are all busy.
Solution
There is not much you can do when this happens. You will have to wait for the lines to clear up. If however, the problem persists, you may contact the 95Net office to verify the integrity of the phone lines and system.
I type in a website address and I get the message "Error 404: File Not Found"
This is an error message you will get while browsing the web. It's not uncommon, and quite often is out of your control.
Possibility
The web site either does not exist, has been moved, or you have typed in the wrong address.
Solution
Verify the address and try it again. If it still doesn't work, verify that you can visit other web sites and try contacting the referring page or using a search engine or directory.
Error Message: "Dial-Up Networking could not find the modem specified."
A simple problem that can generally be fixed without re-installing the modem.
Possibility
The modem listed in your dial-up networking connection is no longer in your system..
Solution
Open My Computer, and then Dial-Up Networking. Right-click the 95Net connection icon and go to its properties. At the bottom, you can select the correct modem. Drop down the menu and choose the correct modem if it is listed. If it is not listed, you may have to re-install the modem.Possibility
The modem was not installed properly.
Solution
Uninstall the modem via the Modems icon in the Control Panel. Restart the computer and either let it detect the modem or go to the Control Panel and add it manually.- Back to Tech Support
